Megalodon the Biggest Shark Ever.

Megalodon the Super Predator

Megalodon, the biggest shark that ever lived. It was as big as a whale and could easily have swallowed a small car whole!

Megalodon meaning “big tooth”, from Ancient Greekmegas “big, mighty” + from odous “tooth”. It is an extinct species of shark that lived approximately 28 to 1.5 million years ago, during the Cenozoic Era (late Oligocene to early Pleistocene).

Megalodon is regarded as one of the largest and most powerful predators in vertebrate history, and likely had a profound impact on the structure of marine communities.

Fossil remains suggest that this giant shark reached a maximum length of 14–18 metres (46–59 ft), and hunted in all the world’s oceans.

Scientists suggest that Megalodon looked like a stockier version of the great white sharkCarcharodon carcharias.

Megalodon had the most powerful bite of any creature that ever lived on planet Earth.

In 2008, a joint research team from Australia and the U.S. used computer simulations to calculate Megalodon’s biting power.

The results can only be described as terrifying. Megalodon would bite down on its prey with a force of between 10.8 and 18.2 tons…. enough to crush the skull of a prehistoric whale as easily as a grape.

Megalodon Tooth

Todays apex predators like the Great White Shark can only manage a 1.8 tons of bite force and a lion with a wimpy 600 pounds or so. Megalodon’s teeth were unto 7 inches long. As big as a man’s hand.

The biggest shark that still roams the waters is the Great White Pointer. It’s teeth are less than half that size.

No one knows what caused Megalodon to become extinct.

It was a true monster. A huge, relentless, apex predator. A killing and eating machine!

But it became extinct. What went wrong?

There’s no lack of theories. Megalodon may have been doomed by global cooling (which culminated in the numerous Ice Ages), or by the gradual disappearance of the giant whales that constituted the bulk of its diet.

But as our story shows, some people think Megalodon still lurks in the ocean’s depths.
